Best Golf Games to Play with Your Group

Looking to add some excitement and competition to your next round? These top golf games are guaranteed to bring out your group’s competitive edge. Here’s how to play five of our favorites:

1. Wolf

Wolf is the ultimate test of strategy and loyalty. Here’s how it works: Players rotate as the “Wolf” on each hole. After each tee shot, the Wolf decides whether to team up with another player or go solo. If the Wolf picks a partner, their score is matched against the other two players. If the Wolf goes solo, their score stands against all three. Points are awarded based on the outcome: 2 for a win with a partner, 3 for a solo win, and 0 for a loss. The Wolf role rotates each hole, and the player with the most points at the end wins!

2. Hammer

Hammer adds a layer of risk and reward to your match play. Here’s the twist: At any time before a shot, one player can “hammer” their opponent, doubling the stakes of the hole. The opponent can either accept the challenge or “re-hammer” to raise the stakes even higher. Each hole turns into a strategic battle as players decide when to hammer, making every shot feel like it could swing the match. A great game for confident players who thrive under pressure!

3. Wad

Wad keeps everyone engaged with a putting showdown. Any putt beyond the length of the flagstick is WAD-eligible. Sink a WAD putt, and $2 goes into the pot. The catch? It must be your first putt on the green, no matter your score. The fun ramps up with variations—double the pot for birdies, triple for eagles, or even add chip-ins. Whoever holds the WAD after the final putt on 18 takes the entire pot. Wad is perfect for keeping the competition alive on every hole!

4. Nassau

Nassau is a classic golf betting game that breaks your round into three matches: front nine, back nine, and total 18. Players or teams agree on a bet amount for each match. Points are awarded separately for winning each segment, and additional points can be earned through side bets like birdies, sandies, or closest to the pin. With multiple opportunities to win (or lose), Nassau keeps the stakes high throughout the round.

5. Vegas

Vegas pairs up players and adds a unique scoring twist. Instead of adding team members’ scores, you combine them as digits. For example, if Player A scores 4 and Player B scores 5, the team’s score for that hole is 45. The lower score always goes first, and the difference between the two teams’ scores is the amount of money owed. A birdie or eagle can dramatically shift the game’s momentum, making Vegas a thrilling option for players who love fast-paced action.

Each of these games brings something special to the table, whether it’s strategy, camaraderie, or high-stakes putting. Try one (or all) on your next outing and report back with which you liked best.
